Lately, we’ve been trying something new during our quiet time.
You see, we have an interesting dynamic over here. We are all introverts… with the sole exception of my 4-year-old.
As introverts, we all treasure our daily quiet time… with the sole exception of my 4-year-old.
For four years this wasn’t a problem because the littlest guy napped, but naps have recently become a thing of the past. I mean, they happen sometimes but not enough to bank on.
And that means that, for the past several months, my youngest has spent his quiet time seeking the company of his big brother and sister.
He gets silly.
He gets loud.
He enters their rooms and causes drama.
And then it snowballs and before you know it, quiet time is over and there was absolutely nothing quiet about it.
Folks, I need quiet time. I am such a better, happier, more patient mom when I’ve had sixty minutes to myself, in quiet.
A few weeks ago it occurred to me that I could fix this problem by suggesting that the kids have quiet time together. I explained that it was still supposed to be quiet, but they could read together or complete a puzzle together or listen to an audiobook or Sparkle Stories.

It’s so adorable that I sneak up there, now and then, to spy on the sibling cuteness.
Well, the other day, I was creeping up the stairs when I overheard a quiet time conversation. It went something like this:
7-year-old: According to the Bible, God created the Earth in seven days. He rested on the seventh and that is Sunday and it is the holiest day.
6-year-old: So did God create everything?
7-year-old: Yes.
6-year-old: So did God create things?
7-year-old: Well, that’s where it gets tricky. God created people and people create the things.
4-year-old: Did God create dinosaurs?
7-year-old: Yes, He created all living things. Remember Noah’s Ark? He saved a male and a female of each animal.
[Long pause]
6-year-old: Did God make the dinosaurs extinct? Because they weren’t on the ark?
7-year-old: You know what guys? You brought up something very interesting! If God created Adam and Eve, how did the dinosaurs come into it all? Like, there were cave people. People evolved and they didn’t used to look like we look like now. So how did Adam and Eve happen? And then the dinosaurs…. it’s all mixed up. The Bible says Adam and Eve were people, not cave people. So how could they be evolved already, before the dinosaurs?
[Pause]
7-year-old: The Bible always makes you ask questions, that’s the thing about the Bible.
6-year-old: It’s confusing.
7-year-old: Yes, it is. The Bible is always confusing. We’ll just ask Mum after quiet time.
4-year-old: Let’s just keep listening to the Sparkle Story and not worry about it.
7- & 6-year-old: Okay.
And then I crept back down those stairs, as silently as I possibly could because I was not prepared to have an Adam and Eve and dinosaurs quiet time convo without another cup of coffee.
I have a feeling our quiet times could stir up some BIG questions, with those three little minds sharing one quiet room together. I’d best catch up on my sleep!
